No Overall Control
All-Out Elections

Following all-out elections at Bedford Borough Council under new ward boundaries, the Council remains in No Overall Control.

The boundary changes saw the number of councillors on the authority increased to 46, and the creation of new wards such as Wixams and Wilstead which were key targets for both the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats.

Bedford Borough Council has been hung since 1986 and remains so with the Conservatives and Labour each on 14 seats.

A Mayoral election also took place at Bedford Borough Council, which saw Conservative candidate Tom Wootton unexpectedly defeat the now former Liberal Democrat Mayor Dave Hodgson by a narrow margin of just 145 votes. Dave Hodgson had served in the role for over 13 years.

Labour made the most gains, picking up three seats whilst the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats both lost councillors. The Greens and Independents both also gained one seat.

The political composition of the Council is now as follows:

  • Conservative: 14
  • Labour: 14
  • Liberal Democrat: 13
  • Green: 3
  • Independent: 2

Bedford Borough Council will hold its AGM on Wednesday, 17th May.
