Central Bedfordshire

No Overall Control
All-Out Elections

Following the trend across much of the Home Counties, Central Beds has slipped into No Overall Control. The new administration seems likely to be led by the Independents who now form the largest single grouping. To secure a working majority they need a further five seats which means they can chose a partner from Liberal Democrats or Labour (or both).

Before the election the authority was solidly Conservative, with the party holding a commanding majority over local Independents, Liberal Democrats and Labour. These elections have seen that lead turn around in a dramatic fashion:

  • Conservative – 20 (-18)
  • Independent – 27 (+9)
  • Labour – 5 (+4)
  • Liberal Democrat – 10 (+7)
  • Green – 1 (+1)

As with several other authorities with significant changes of control, it will take some time for a new administration to be formed and identify priorities.

The previous leader, Cllr Richard Wenham, retained his seat in the redrawn ward of Clifton, Henlow and Langford.

Full council is due to be held on 25th May.
