Lewes
On a day when the various anti-Conservative parties all had reasons to be cheerful, Lewes was an example where all three managed to advance in unison.
Though Lewes Council remains in No Overall Control, the Conservative opposition – who had prior to the election held 19 seats – was entirely wiped off the council. Each of the three progressive parties in the administration saw advances, with the Green Party now poised to take over from the Liberal Democrats at the head of the incoming coalition.
In a district known for the unpredictability of its planning decisions, the move towards a Green-led administration will pose further questions for the development industry.
The new distribution of seats is as follows:
- Green: 17 seats
- Liberal Democrats: 15 seats
- Labour: 9 seats
- Conservative: 0 seats (-19)
- Independents/Others: 0 seats (-2)
