Reigate and Banstead
Following the elections in Reigate and Banstead, where a third of councillors faced re-election, the Conservatives narrowly held on to their majority and remain in control of the council.
The Green Party gained two seats from the Conservatives, including the Hooley, Merstham and Netherne ward – formerly held by outgoing Leader of the Council, Mark Brunt – who stood down at this election.
Labour picked up their first seat on the council in two decades, winning in their target ward of Redhill West and Wray Common.
Despite the losses and their majority being reduced to just one, the Conservatives will be pleased to remained in control, given their declining vote share in the county – and due to the sophisticated electoral pact between the opposition parties.
After the election, the political composition of the council is as follows:
- Conservatives – 23
- Green – 11
- Residents Associations – 6
- Liberal Democrats – 3
- Independent – 1
- Labour – 1
Reigate & Banstead will hold its AGM on Thursday, 25th May.
