No Overall Control
All-Out Elections

Conservatives lose control of South Gloucestershire Council, with No Overall Control declared.

The Conservatives eight year reign was swept aside, on a night of gains for both Labour and the Lib Dems. The Conservatives will be disappointed to have lost ten seats but it wasn’t unexpected.

Meanwhile, Labour will be delighted having gone from 11 seats previously to 17 seats now, and will be hoping to agree a power-sharing agreement with the Lib Dems.

You can see the breakdown of the 2023 election results below:

Seats
Conservative Party 23
Liberal Democrat 20
Labour 17
Independent and Others 1

Cllr Toby Savage, the outgoing Leader of South Gloucestershire Council, said: ” It’s clearly a disappointing evening for the Conservatives in South Gloucestershire and it’s clearly the case that national issues are impacting on these local polls. I feel desperately sad for colleagues who have lost seats because of those national factors. I want to thank them for the work they’ve done over so many years to serve their communities,”

Labour and the Liberal Democrats are expected to join forces and form a coalition which will be formalised at the Council’s AGM on Wednesday 24th May. This will also be the moment when key Committee and Cabinet roles are made public.
