Labour
Elected in Thirds

Labour has retained control of Wakefield Council, increasing its substantial majority on a good day for the party in the North, and across the country.

With one third of councillors up for election, Labour gained six seats to put the party on 49 overall.

Labour’s majority had dwindled somewhat over the course of the Corbyn/Brexit years, but with the party on the up again nationally, the trend appears to have been reversed.

The new distribution of seats is as follows:

  • Labour: 49 seats
  • Conservatives: 7 seats
  • Independents/Others: 4 seats
  • Liberal Democrats: 3 seats

The council’s annual election will take place on
