Welwyn Hatfield

No Overall Control
Elected in Thirds

Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council has slipped into No Overall Control, after the Conservatives lost three seats to leave the party two seats shy of a majority.

Labour have made gains in Haldens, Hatfield East and Hatfield Villages, while the Liberal Democrats are making gains in Welham Green & Hatfield South, and in Hatfield South West. While some of these gains were in Labour/Lib Dem marginals, the net result for the local authority is as follows:

  • Conservatives: 22 seats
  • Liberal Democrats: 14 seats
  • Labour: 12 seats

While council leader Cllr Tony Kingsbury retained his seat in Welwyn West, the overall picture for the party is unambiguous in opening the door to a Liberal Democrat/Labour coalition administration – likely led by Liberal Democrat Cllr Paul Zukowskyj.

Welwyn Hatfield’s Annual Council meeting is scheduled for Monday 22 May.
