Wokingham

No Overall Control
Elected in Thirds

The Liberal Democrats have become the largest party on Wokingham Borough Council but have fallen short of the necessary amount for a majority following elections by thirds.

In total, 18 of Wokingham’s 54 seats were contested. Heading into the election, no party had an overall majority – the Conservatives were the largest party with 26 seats, whilst the council was run by the Wokingham Borough Partnership consisting of the Liberal Democrats (23 seats), Labour (three seats), and Independents (two seats).

Following the election, the Lib Dems are still two seats shy of an overall majority but if they and Labour decide to continue in a coalition they will run the council together. Speaking after the election, Wokingham Borough Council leader, Liberal Democrat Clive Jones, said “We [the Lib Dems] will look to work with other parties on the council so that the Liberal Democrats remain the administration of the council.”

After 18 out of 18 seats declared, the council composition is as follows:

  • Liberal Democrats – 26
  • Conservatives – 22
  • Labour – 5
  • Independents and Others – 1
